'Dexter' star confirms return to show

Dexter star Julie Benz has confirmed reports that she will return for the show's upcoming fifth season.

Benz's character Rita, who was married to Dexter (Michael C. Hall), was murdered by the Trinity Killer in the last season finale.

However, Benz told that Rita will be an important part of future episodes.

"Rita's presence is definitely going to be felt throughout the season," she explained. "You can't deny that she had an effect on Dexter's life, which is really what this season's about."

Benz refused to comment on rumours that Rita will feature in flashbacks, but said: "You're going to learn more about their relationship. I loved Rita and Dexter's storyline, even though I know others didn't always like it.

"I do believe her ending was too abrupt, so returning [is about] my love for the character, the show and the fans, to give some sort of closure to help the story move forward."

Dexter is expected to return for its fifth season in September.
